Situated in the western Loire area, the Vendee
is certainly one of France’s
most sought-after holiday destinations. Its unique combination of glorious coastline and diverse countryside make it perfect for beach lovers, nature enthusiasts and family holidays. It offers a taste of 'real France', with some of the best beaches, picturesque villages, historic towns, true French culture - all this easily accessible from the channel ports (3 to 3 1/2 hours drive from St Malo), yet far enough south to enjoy reliable summers and a warm, sunny low season.
The northwest coast offers you delightful coves, sandy beaches, rocky points and traditional ports, whilst the southern coast boasts vast expanses of beach backing onto miles of wild dunes and cool pine forest. Most of the beaches are ideal for families and there are also several good surfing spots and a wide range of water-sports. From the point at L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer in the south, including La Faute sur Mer, La Tranche sur mer, round to St Vincent-sur-Jard, the longest sandy beach extends virtually uninterrupted for over 12 miles. The islands Yeu (1 hour by ferry)of Noirmoutier (access by the famous causeway at low tide) and are both well worth a day trip.
In the south Vendee you will find the wide open spaces of the plain, with the historic towns of Lucon and Fontenay le Comte, and nearer the coast the reclaimed fens of the "marais deseché" with its network of canals, spectacular skys and a wealth of bird-life. The north of the Vendee has gently rolling hills, dotted with small farms and picturesque rural villages. In the area around the its major town Les Herbiers you will find a wealth of attractions and sites to visit. The valley of the river Sevre Nantais is particularly worth a visit, as is the famous history theme park of "Le Puy du Fou". It's worth remembering that the north Vendee is within easy reach of the chateaux and vineyards of the Loire Valley (Les Herbiers to Angers takes just 1 1/2 hours).
